“ My family and I were looking for dinner after an evening concert, so the options were limited to what was open at 9pm on a weeknight. We were happy to find Matchstick Bar & Grill was open-and they were very welcoming of us walking in an hour before closing time. The ambience/decor is whimsical and fun. There are several Instagram-worthy backdrops and even brightly colored disco ball-esque lighting at the front entrance. It's really a fun vibe. The service was friendly, and the food came out rather quickly. I absolutely adored the egg drop soup and edamame. The skewers were a little overcooked and over seasoned for my taste, but that could be personal preference. Seeing that everyone else loves them, and that's what they are known for, I'd assume it's just me. Overall, I'd return and try different menu items. There are plenty of things to choose from, so I'm sure I can find something I'd love. ”

Vera was outstanding with her service and pre-bussing. ***My recommendations*** *The triple treat is worth the value The pot stickers are divine, perfectly fried, and the Gyoza sauce perfectly balanced out the flavors. Did I already mention the pot stickers were fried to perfection? The oil used to fry then was also incredibly clean and pure. The foil cooked inoki mushrooms were outstanding. I normally shy away from ' ' 'Szechuan-Flower-Spice' but they added the perfect amount. *The chicken wing skewers; the Quail Egg and the Chicken gizzards played and paired perfectly with the inoki and vermicelli noodles. The flavors paired too well and is a must have experience. The eggdrop soup was poorly made.. the addition of corn would have been a great addition but they use canned corn. I could still taste the metal from the can in my soup. The edamame was good but still frozen in some parts. *The cat claw rice cakes were a wild new experience for me.. think mochi-meets-pancake. Awesome and surprising. The cream cheese wonton routine.. The 'House' fried rice mediocre.. The ham fried rice mediocre.. Decent oolong tea. ~10/10 ”

“ What a gem! I was not expecting to find this in SLC. Ambiance: Plenty of seating inside that's light and airy with lots of windows. Service: Friendly and quick. Food was also fast. Food: We got a bunch of the skewers (beef, lamb, and pork belly), the cucumber salad (good to balance out the spice of the meats), and chicken skin. It was all so good and seasoned just the way it should be. There was quite a bit of food for the price as well. It can be spicy for some but I found that it was perfect and what I've seen in other big cities. Overall, great place and would try again! I do find it funny that the skewers are on the back of the menu but it's what they're known for! ”

“ Loved this place! The beef kebab was so good and so cheap (only $0.49 each!). The pork intestine was yummy, too. The grilled squid was alright - a bit disappointing. The garlic eggplant tasted good, but it's pricey and the portion was not that big. They basically used the same seasonings for most of their kebabs, so you might get bored of the taste after a few sticks. And since the kebabs taste similar, getting the beef kebabs would be the best deal. I'd come back to this place and eat like 20 beef kebabs and call it good for lunch! Nice and clean environment. When I went, it seemed like there was only one server lol. Thankfully, it was not busy, so it didn't take too long for the food to arrive, but there were times we weren't helped and didn't see the server anywhere. ”

“ This feels like socializing beer food in a good way. The food pairs well with alcohol. I can't speak to the grilling part as I only tried the "sticks" but I loved the sticks alone. It's fun and you have a variety of meats and vegetables as options. Though there are a variety of items you can try, the taste might be similar as they are marinated and seasoned similar. The restaurant ambiance is nice and sleek with modern touches. The server was super nice and attentive. I really enjoyed my experience at Matchstick. ”

“ New Chinese bbq restaurant in West Salt Valley. In a little area sharing parking with a few other restaurants. The restaurant used to be a pho restaurant and is absolutely beautiful with open spaces, large windows letting natural light come in and huge booths for group dinners. To order you make your selection with a pencil on the menu and then sit back and wait for the food to arrive. We started with the beef skewers that were on special at $.49 a skewer so we had to try them. They were yummy with a cumin flavor. For our entree, we ordered the Grand combo which was only $29.99 and had pork cheeks, shrimp, scallops, beef ribs and more. The meat is grilled for you by the server and served with a garlic sauce and pepper flakes. On its own the meat doesn't have much flavor so you need the sauce imo. The cucumbers were nice and crunchy with a kick and helped break the all meat taste. Definitely a great and fun restaurant. Check it out! ”

“ Went on a whirlwind road trip through AZ, NM, CO, UT, NV, and back to CA in 6 days, and if I'm being honest, it's a blur of rest stops and asphalt. Out of all the bistros, brasseries, and bars I popped in, however, Matchstick Bar & Grill was a rare moment that stands out in hi-res. An exterior of orderly wooden slats belie a playful creative interior. Stepping in, I was greeted by a hanging pair of dark angel wings in 3D that looked just my size. No rush getting that perfect photo because you're not greeted by a person until you walk behind the partition wall. The rest of the restaurant is also decked out in trendy black, overlooked by a sizable technicolor wall mural. High ceilings and wide booths made the space breathable and comfy. Small details from verdant glass planters down to the cute piggy pencil topper made it personable. A current EDM pop soundtrack set a modern mood, but the food was pretty authentic. The Lamb Skewers, 4 sticks per order, carried the same aroma of cumin and onion as the ones from the streets of China. The Pork Belly and Beef Skewers were spiced up nicely as well. A few pieces of beef were gristly though. Better trimming would improve the texture a lot. As for sides, the Grilled Bread, 2 large pieces with julienned green onions folded in the middle, had a nice balance of crisp and chew. The Cucumber Salad was refreshing, light on sodium with some kick from the chiles. Service was kind and welcoming, on par with the cool vibes and cravable eats. I didn't get to spend a lot of time in the SLC area, but if Matchstick Bar & Grill truly represents, then I have nothing but love for this city. ”
